AIU Centre of Excellence in Socio-Economic Development and Innovation (ACE-SEDI)
About
At the core of its mission to become a distinguished institution in the ‘Social Business’, AIU is focused on establishing ACE-SEDI, an interdisciplinary research hub. This dynamic research entity is dedicated to advancing scholarly endeavours and fostering collaboration, networking, and community engagement. Through ACE-SEDI, AIU aims to stimulate innovative initiatives that transcend traditional boundaries. Collaborating closely with the AIU-Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC), ACE-SEDI will be pivotal in spearheading applied programs aligned with the 3Zeros mission. By harnessing collective expertise and resources, these collaborative efforts seek to drive meaningful impact and sustainable change within social entrepreneurship and business innovation.
AIU- Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC)
The Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) was established at AIU in June 2019, serving as a global hub for social business within universities. It operates in line with the principles of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, established through a collaboration between Yunus Centre and the university. YSBCs are committed to advancing the understanding and practice of social business among students, scholars, and researchers. They engage in various activities such as research, academic programs, curriculum development, and knowledge-sharing events like workshops and seminars. These centers constantly seek innovative ways to extend the reach of social business within the university and the broader community and region.
In 2023, the AIU-YSBC partnered with YSBC Dhaka to co-host the 13th Social Business Day on July 27-28 and the Academia Dialogue and 3Zero Convention on July 29 in Langkawi.
AIU-YSBC has won three consecutive years of the Best Affiliating Institution awards in promoting the World of 3ZEROS during the 3ZERO Convention in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

AIU-Social Business Design Lab (SBDL)
Established in 2020, the AIU-Social Business Design Lab (SBDL) champions the advancement of social business concepts. As a collaborative hub, it empowers students and staff to foster innovative thinking and devise solutions to societal challenges. Students actively participate in community initiatives and projects to create impactful solutions and foster innovation. This hands-on involvement allows them to grasp the core issues, confront challenges, strategise solutions, and propose effective resolutions. Our community engagement initiatives focus on the districts of Baling and Sik, Kedah, and, recently, Sabah. The objective is to develop new approaches, business models, tools, software, or apps that elevate the quality of life, especially for those with limited financial means. These proposed solutions will be transformed into viable social business ideas. The lab is structured into three clusters, aligning with Professor Muhammad Yunus’s vital global priorities: (1) Eradicating Poverty (Zero Wealth Concentration), (2) Addressing Unemployment (Zero Unemployment), and (3) Reducing Net Carbon Emissions (Zero Net Carbon Emissions).
The 3ZERO CLUB is an initiative towards achieving the Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus’s vision of creating a world of three zeros — zero net carbon emission, zero wealth concentration for ending poverty, and zero unemployment by unleashing entrepreneurship in all. Compliment with the 8-Hour Rule by AIU, the 3ZERO CLUB activities allow the students and staff to fulfil the 8-hour contribution to society (by helping others in need).
Students and staff may register for the 3ZERO CLUB via this link: https://3zero.club/
During the 3ZERO Convention in Langkawi, 2023, AIU 3ZERO CLUB, Po-stitch won The Best 3ZERO CLUB award. Po-Stitch is a group of 5 students who recycle and upcycle used fabrics under the Zero Net Carbon Emission cluster.

The university is committed to serving humanity through proactive community engagement and development initiatives, with a specific focus on the province of Kedah. To make a tangible impact, the university has strategically selected two districts within Kedah, Baling and Sik, as focal points for their comprehensive community outreach programs. AIU has recently expanded their community engagement program to Sabah.
These programs are meticulously designed with a clear objective: to alleviate the pressing issues of poverty and unemployment prevalent in these districts. Through a multi-faceted approach, the university aims to address immediate needs and implement sustainable solutions that empower these communities for long-term growth and prosperity.
Mak Lang Kerepek
Mak Lang, a resilient mother of 10, ran a cottage business selling traditional chips in Kampung Tembak A Ulu, Baling, facing immense challenges due to her husband’s health issues and the pandemic’s adverse effects on sales. With her husband’s heart attack and stroke, the family’s primary support in the business waned. Saidah, their daughter with a degree in arts, recognised the digital marketing gap and stepped in to help.
AIU’s Social Business Design Lab (SBDL) intervened, understanding the dire situation and the need for a new business strategy. The team helped establish a brand, secure sales contracts, and launch online platforms. Students were pivotal in leveraging social media and Shopee to revitalise sales. Within two months, they generated RM3,985.70 and secured an RM3,000 contract with Farmer’s Mart.
This intervention proved transformative. Saidah’s proactive approach doubled the business’s income, allowed for savings, and supported four younger siblings to attend school. The family achieved a significant milestone in 2022 by finally opening a bank account and receiving RM15,100 from AIU to invest in machinery, which is essential for meeting increased demand.
Mak Lang’s story epitomises the struggles of rural micro-entrepreneurs facing limited resources and access to expertise. The AIU-SBDL intervention became a beacon of hope, bridging knowledge gaps and empowering students as rural business consultants. The action-based learning approach at AIU groomed these students to tackle real-life challenges, preparing them for future social businesses.
Saidah’s journey is a testament to the 3 Zero concepts, where she revitalised her family’s business and addressed unemployment and poverty in her community. By hiring local single mothers, she became a catalyst for change, offering opportunities where there were none before.
This real-life case highlighted the significant impact of educational institutions like AIU in fostering socio-economic growth. The hands-on learning experience empowered students and helped rural micro-entrepreneurs thrive. Focusing on social business concepts, the intervention model promises upliftment in rural areas.
Through AIU’s intervention, Mak Lang’s story transformed from adversity to hope. The family business saw remarkable growth, enabled by Saidah’s determination and the guidance of AIU’s SBDL team. Their journey showcases the potential for educational institutions to be agents of change, not just in classrooms but in real-world scenarios, impacting lives and communities.
Chili Fertigation Project
The Zero Poverty Project by AIU is creating waves of Mukim Teloi Kanan in Baling, Kedah, by addressing poverty at its origins. The recent initiative, which aimed to improve household income, has adopted a practical approach by focusing on chilli fertigation for low-income households, particularly rubber tappers and small farmers. The project planning and execution, which begins in April 2023, aims to lift these families out of poverty and empower them to control their economic futures.
Seven carefully selected participants participated in the first round of the chilli fertigation project. The chosen families, mostly rubber tappers and small-scale farmers, have monthly incomes of less than RM1,000, putting them in Malaysia’s hardcore poor category. The stark reality of absolute poverty, defined as a monthly income of less than RM2,208, has prompted AIU to intervene and give a long-term solution to break the cycle of deprivation.
The journey began with two determined farmers, and the first fertigation set was constructed in June 2023. Mohd Amirul, a 36-year-old father of two and a small farmer with modest earnings of RM1,000 a month, is one of the pioneers. The attractive market pricing of chillies lured Amirul compared to his past vegetable crops because he wanted to supplement his income.
The project focused on growing 100 chilli plants and yielded its first crop in August 2023, a testament to the participating farmers. Amirul and his fellow participants could quickly see the rewards of their labour due to the relatively short two-month gestation period for chiles. Amirul was guided by mentors and fueled by a devotion to alleviating poverty, demonstrating great perseverance and determination.
Amirul’s efforts bore fruit from August until today. The plants can produce fruits continuously until they reach one year of age. His profit collection from 24 August until 11 Nov 2023 (25 times of harvesting) is RM1400, which represents a significant increase over his prior earnings and demonstrates the viability of the chilli fertigation operation. Amirul’s tangible achievement catalysed transformation, pushing him to reinvest in his future.
Amirul’s story took an inspirational turn when he decided to reinvest his gains by installing another fertigation system at his own expense. The choice to expand his enterprise demonstrates the initiative’s economic potential and Amirul’s increased confidence and belief in his capacity to determine his destiny. Amirul’s drive is expected to have a ripple effect on the remaining seven participants, instilling hope and confidence in the community.
As the chilli plants bloom under the watchful eye of these aspiring farmers, AIU’s Zero Poverty Project demonstrates the transforming impact of focused interventions. Beyond economic improvement, the effort seeds self-sufficiency and community empowerment. Amirul’s journey exemplifies how, with persistence, guidance, capital injection and the appropriate opportunity, even the most economically disadvantaged people can break free from poverty and create a brighter and more sustainable future for themselves and their community.
Mohida Enterprise
Established in 1979, Mohida Enterprise is a family-owned small to medium-sized business led by Mr. Husni Bin Mohd Isa, who inherited the enterprise from his late father. Renowned for its line of sauces, including soy, chilli, tomato, and vinegar sold under the brand name “Lembu Berlaga,” the company once enjoyed significant popularity, particularly in Kedah. However, due to limited marketing initiatives, their market presence has diminished, primarily confined to Baling, certain parts of Kedah, and Perak. Despite producing high-quality sauces with premium ingredients certified by MeSTI and HALAL, the company’s production capacity has decreased, raising concerns about its survival.
Acknowledging their shortfall in digital marketing strategies compared to competitors, Mr. Husni seeks assistance to revitalise the brand’s visibility and increase sales. Recommended by Penghulu Mukim Teloi Kanan, AIU-Social Business Design Lab, experienced in aiding micro and SME businesses in Baling, will support Mohida Enterprise. The collaboration aims to assist in rebranding the products and impart digital marketing expertise to Mohida’s staff.
The action plan from the Social Business Design Lab includes a three-month digital marketing coaching program and the creation of a corporate business video by students from the Bachelor of Media and Communication program. The initiatives have been uniquely crafted to cater to the needs and advancement of the Mohida enterprise.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks to ensure the sustainability of Mohida Enterprise, potentially generating more employment opportunities for local villagers. Acknowledging small and medium enterprises (SMEs) pivotal role in community economic growth and actively supporting their success can significantly benefit the region. This support can translate into the creation of job opportunities and a reduction in poverty levels within the area.

Alternative School Batu 4 Tawau Sabah
In the coastal town of Tawau, a special school existed, hidden away from the bustling streets and overlooked by many. This school is different from the others; it welcomed children whom society had forgotten, those without the proper papers to attend public education. On 11 November 2023, a team from AIU had the opportunity to visit them. AIU team comprised five persons and conducted two programmes with the school children that day: the Literacy and Numeracy Screening Programme (LINUS) and Understanding Entrepreneurship.
Forty-two children are enrolled in this school, with several more waiting in line. However, the available space can only accommodate the existing number. One of the villagers donated part of his small house to create a school, hoping to keep the village’s children away from crime or substance misuse.
These children were born in Tawau, just like their parents, but their existence was denied official recognition. They longed for an education, a chance to learn and dream like any other child. We witnessed a heartening sight: the children’s unwavering hunger for knowledge shone through in their eyes. The current statistics reveal that over 200,000 individuals in Sabah remain stateless. Are we willing to overlook these undeniable facts? Among those affected, children bear the brunt of this issue.
In quiet conversations, a group of girls shared their stories with us. They spoke of their love for learning, of dreams woven into their souls despite the harsh reality of being ‘invisible children.’ They wanted to be seen, to have the chance to shape their futures.
The program serves as our inaugural engagement with undocumented children with rudimentary literacy skills. However, despite their limited educational foundation, the adversities they have faced in life have remarkably accelerated their maturity, surpassing their actual age. Following a day spent with them, it became evident that the undocumented children in the school harbour remarkable talent and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Hindered by the lack of valid documentation, numerous opportunities remain out of reach.
Our hearts swelled with empathy for these resilient souls. We left Tawau carrying not just memories but a determination to shed light on the plight of these ‘invisible’ children—children with dreams; they are innocent souls seeking a chance to blossom.
Community Engagement Sekolah Alternatif Tawau
Community Engagement Programmes in Baling 2020-2021
At AIU, fostering a culture of impactful social business and community development research is strongly encouraged. To empower our academic staff, we provide grants tailored to support their research endeavours. These grants come in three forms: a short-term and knowledge transfer grant spanning one year and a more extensive two-year matching grant. The matching grant, in particular, opens doors to collaborative research initiatives, fostering partnerships with local institutions and international universities. This opportunity allows for enriched exchanges of ideas and expertise, amplifying the impact of our research efforts across borders and disciplines.
