ALOR SETAR, 19 November 2025 – Albukhary International University (AIU) participated in the Rural Social Enterprise Gathering (RSEG) 2025 held at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu from 3 to 5 November. The event served as a platform for engagement with policymakers, entrepreneurs, and change makers to explore opportunities in rural innovation and inclusive development.
Organised by the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre in collaboration with the Social Enterprise World Forum, the gathering brought together local and international stakeholders to discuss ways to advance sustainable rural social enterprises and community-driven development.
Throughout the sessions, the AIU delegation gained insights into how social enterprises can drive positive change through grassroots innovation, empathy-led solutions, and strong community partnerships. These learnings align with AIU’s mission of nurturing globally conscious graduates committed to serving humanity through social business principles.
Led by Mr. Abu Bakar Ngah, Director of the Centre for Community and Industry Engagement, the delegation also conducted learning visits to four rural social enterprises across Sabah, which were Brutti, Borneo Fertilyst, Pace A Voi, and DumoWongi. These visits strengthen AIU’s efforts to integrate academic learning with practical, community-based experiences.
Brutti, founded by Lukman Awaluddin and Siti Faznur, is a bespoke furniture social enterprise that grew from a former car wash business. Built on the philosophy of Karya Anak Bangsa, it highlights craftsmanship among youth and is one of the few Malaysian companies offering a menstrual leave policy for female staff.
Borneo Fertilyst, founded by Bella and her husband Jimar, turns agricultural waste into sustainable products such as Mikrobella bio fertiliser and cocopeat. The enterprise supports rural communities, promotes sustainable agriculture, and encourages entrepreneurship across Sabah.
Pace A Voi, led by Mariana and Olivia, produces stingless bee honey while empowering local farmers through skills development and income-generating opportunities.
The final visit was to DumoWongi, founded by Irene Masitol, which uses local botanicals to produce essential oils, herbal wellness items, and handcrafted products. The enterprise provides training for women and youth while helping preserve cultural heritage.
Insights gained from RSEG 2025 and the visits will guide new initiatives and learning opportunities for AIU students and staff, supporting the university’s ongoing commitment to social enterprise development and community empowerment.
The AIU delegation also included
