The objectives of the conference are:
- To share best practices, innovative ideas, and experiences in initiatives and actions related to social business and SDGs through 3Zeros.
- To foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among students, faculty, and external stakeholders in social business and SDGs through 3Zeros.
- Educate and inspire our university community and stakeholders from industry, corporate bodies, NGOs, and society about the importance of reorienting education for sustainable development, emphasizing the role of social business and SDGs through 3Zeros in promoting innovative solutions to global challenges.
- To explore practical approaches and best practices for integrating the concept of 3Zeros with SDGs into our students’ initiatives. towards Sustainability at York University in Toronto, Canada and serves as Special Advisor to the Provost on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He is the Co-Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute on ESD in Beijing, China.
The UNESCO Chair, established in 1999, was the first one to focus on
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an essential concept for quality education and to position sustainability as a purpose of education. Today, Hopkins coordinates two global ESD research networks, the International Network of Teacher Education Institutions and the #IndigenousESD.The first network is comprised of teacher education institutions in 50 countries and focuses on enhancing ESD in pre-service and in-service teacher training. The second network consists of partners in 40 countries and aims to embed sustainability to improve the education outcomes for Indigenous children and youth. The UNESCO Chair also serves as Global Lead for SDG 4 (Quality Education) in the Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development Global Cluster, led by the International Association of Universities.
Prior to his position as a UNESCO Chair at York University, Hopkins was Superintendent of Curriculum with the Toronto Board of Education. In earlier positions, he served as teacher, principal, and Regional Superintendent, and created two major outdoor/urban learning centers in North America.
He was a founder and co-chair of the pan-Canadian Sustainability and Education Academy (SEdA), a professional development program designed to assist senior education officials and leaders from ministries of education, school boards and faculties of education in reorienting K-12 school systems towards sustainability.
Internationally, Hopkins has a long relationship with education and sustainability and has been a continuous part of UNESCO’s efforts to develop ESD since its inception. Beginning in 1989 as part of the UN preparation team for the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Hopkins was a drafter of Chapter 36 of Agenda 21: Promoting Education, Public Awareness and Training. He advised the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development-UNDESD (2005-2014).
