AIU BEC students show how small bites shape a sustainable future
ALOR SETAR, 20 June 2025 – Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Rakyat, Alor Setar, became the launching point for a meaningful journey yesterday, one that inspired young minds to rethink food waste and reimagine sustainability.
The campaign, titled “Mengurus Sisa Makan, Memelihara Kehidupan,” was part of the Final Year Community Engagement Project by Bachelor of Economics (BEC) students from Albukhary International University (AIU), a graduation requirement designed to turn classroom knowledge into real-world impact.
Under the guidance of Madam Nur Arfah Abdul Sabian, Lecturer from the School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS), four final-year BEC students partnered with the 3ZERO Club, EnvIro Bio-Solution, and SK Taman Rakyat. Their mission? To raise awareness and promote action around food waste management, and to amplify AIU’s commitment toward achieving Zero Net Emission.
The event was officially launched by Mr. Osaid N. A. Abdaljawwad, Head of Programme for Bachelor of Economics (Honours), who reminded participants that “true change begins with education and the courage to act on it.”
A key highlight was the introduction of Me-Box, an innovative, eco-friendly system using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology to convert food waste into organic fertilizer. Students were captivated by how their everyday leftovers could be transformed into something purposeful and sustainable.
Mr. Mazida Arshad, Headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Rakyat, shared, “This programme is very important for schools like ours. It helps us manage canteen food waste effectively and teaches our students that they can be part of the solution.”
As the pioneer school in this statewide school tour initiative across Kedah, Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Rakyat has set a promising example of how youth-driven action can lead to impactful community change.
At AIU, we believe education must go beyond the classroom. This campaign reflects our mission to innovate solutions that promote the convergence of ideas for a sustainable world, powered by our students, our partners, and our shared purpose.
