ALOR SETAR, 31 July 2025 – A seminar titled “Academic Dishonesty” was held at the Auditorium of Albukhary International University (AIU), organised by the Centre for Foundation and General Studies (CFGS). The session was led by CFGS Lecturer, Mr. Mohd Fadli Zakaria, and formally moderated by Foundation Studies students Phyo Wai Aung and Yee Mon Lwin. The participants comprised students from both the Foundation in Arts and Foundation in Computing programmes, as part of CFGS’s ongoing efforts to prepare them for the academic expectations and ethical standards of undergraduate study.
The seminar featured Mdm Alia Hanim Zainal Abidin, Director of CFGS, who addressed the causes of academic dishonesty, highlighting both intentional acts, such as cheating and plagiarism, and unintentional ones arising from a lack of awareness, diverse academic backgrounds, or low self-confidence. She also shared real-life scenarios involving AIU students to ground the discussion in relatable experiences. Mr. Mohammad Hafis Shafiq Bin Mohammad Sopian, AIU Counsellor, focused on the consequences, which extend beyond academic penalties to include psychological distress, spiritual decline, social trust issues, and even addictive behaviours related to dishonest habits.
The seminar concluded with a highly engaging Q&A session, where students raised thoughtful questions and shared personal reflections. The discussion encouraged open dialogue and reinforced the importance of academic integrity as a shared responsibility. The event served as a timely reminder that honesty and accountability are not only academic values but also essential foundations for personal growth and ethical living.
