
AIU’s Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Training for Social Development

ALOR SETAR, 22 May 2025– Albukhary International University (AIU) successfully hosted a two-day training on “Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) for Social Development” from May 15–16, 2025, bringing together students and development practitioners to explore the effectivity of communication to effect social change.
The training was jointly organised by AIU through the Centre for Development and Academic Excellence (CDAE) and the Bachelor of Social Development (BSD) Programme, in partnership with the Universiti Malaysia Sabah-UNICEF C4D Unit and the Lembaga Kemajuan Wilaya Kedah (KEDA). This is the second year that AIU, UMS-UNICEF C4D and KEDA co-organised the programme to bring real life experiences of KEDA staff from their ongoing community development projects to the workshop sessions. The mix of participants enriched the learning of social development students, while development practitioners- the district officers of KEDA, were introduced to the SBCC approach. Mr. Ildefonso Halipa, Jr. CDAE Director, emphasized that AIU looks forward to furthering this collaboration with KEDA as part of its commitment to community engagement. In response, Mr. Mohammad Azam Omar, KEDA Head of Department of Community Affairs, also reiterate that this type of training is beneficial to KEDA staff in improving their knowledge and technical know-how as the frontliners in community development work.
The SBCC training team were composed of UMS-UNICEF C4D certified fellows, namely: Ms. Jaswinder Kler and Dr. Yasmin Ooi Beng Houi-both from UMS; and Dr. Sitinurbayu Mohd Yusoff and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayesah Uy Abubakar- from AIU.The SBCC approach bridges academic knowledge and applied communication strategies in tackling varied social issues related to health, education, environment, and other emerging issues in the communities. Participants experienced a workshop-style training that allowed them to formulate an SBCC plan as their output.
