ALOR SETAR, 22 September 2025 – The Centre for Research and Innovation Management (CRIM) successfully organised an Intellectual Property (IP) Talk Session titled “From Ideas to Assets Navigating Intellectual Property Across Innovation Pathways” on Friday, 19 September 2025, at the AIU Auditorium.
The talk was delivered by Ts. Irfan Awang, Founder & CEO of Patentsworth International Sdn. Bhd. The session introduced participants to the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP), covering key areas such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and trade secrets. It also highlighted the importance of understanding grace periods in Malaysian IP law, particularly the critical timelines for filing applications after public disclosure. Participants were also guided through common IP myths versus realities, addressing frequent misconceptions among innovators.
The session further showcased real-world case studies from education, computing, and social innovation, demonstrating how IP can be applied across disciplines. It also explored pathways for IP commercialization, including strategies for licensing, partnerships, and spin-offs, explaining to participants how intellectual property can be transformed into valuable assets.
A token of appreciation was presented to the speaker by the Director of CRIM as a gesture of gratitude for the insightful session. The programme concluded with a group photo, reflecting the participants’ enthusiasm and commitment to advancing innovation at AIU.
This talk marked an important first step for the AIU community in understanding intellectual property (IP) and its role in research and innovation. Building on this momentum, a follow-up IP Talk Session will be held in November 2025, continuing AIU’s efforts to strengthen knowledge and skills in IP management.
The programme is part of AIU’s ongoing initiatives under the Centre for Research and Innovation Management (CRIM) to build capacity in research, innovation, and commercialisation, aligning with the university’s mission to promote impactful knowledge creation and community engagement.
