ALOR SETAR, 25 August 2025 – Ms. Salma Fairus Izdihar, a final year Bachelor of Media and Communication (BMC) student at Albukhary International University (AIU) currently interning at Malaysia’s leading newspaper —The Star —has been making a noticeable and visible impression with her news stories accompanied by bylines. She has been placed as a newsdesk intern starting August 1, 2025 until the scheduled finish of her internship in fulfilment of the Industrial Training programme requirement.
Upon being asked about the role BMC played in preparing her for industry, Salma stated that the journalism assignments gave her a solid grasp of news writing. She added, “The core principles and practical exercises taught me the fundamentals and provided insight into how the industry operates. In reality, the industry is far more hectic and fast-paced. I miss the weeks-long journalism assignment deadlines on campus. Here, we get two hours to produce the whole news article.”
She recollects covering a story on a scamming victim—a man in his 50s—who had been duped twice, first by fraudsters and then again by someone posing as a lawyer extending help. “Meeting him in person was a chilling reminder of the very real human stories behind the headlines”, said Salma urging caution and vigilance.
When asked if she had any advice for journalism and print media aspirants, she remarked with a smile, “It is all about how well we work under pressure to deliver excellent write-ups under tight deadlines. Have a strong and solid motivation; be sure as to why you chose this field, so that you won’t get swayed easily by the fast-paced work culture.”
