ALOR SETAR, 28 July 2025 – In a significant display of environmental stewardship, Albukhary International University (AIU) took part in the Iskandar Puteri Blue Carbon initiative, a climate adaptation effort under the Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon framework (Iskandar Puteri Rendah Karbon, IPRK). Held in Iskandar Puteri on 26 July 2025 , the initiative, led by the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), culminated in a mangrove planting event in Kampung Pendas Baru, Gelang Patah, in conjunction with the World Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Day.
Two AIU lecturers, Mr. Aiman Muqri Ahmad Shukri and Ms. Farah Syazwani Hayrol Aziz, played central roles in the programme, not only as participants but also as organisers and researchers under the IPRK community grant awarded in 2024. The event marked a milestone in AIU’s visibility and active contribution to environmental sustainability and community development.
Mr. Aiman, as principal investigator of the IPRK4.0 project “The Blue Carbon Project – Mangrove”, leads AIU’s research on systematic mapping and conservation of blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves and seagrass beds in the waters of Tanjung Kupang. Ms. Farah, as principal researcher of IPRK3.0 “Jom ke Pulau Merambong”, presented her project’s outcomes focusing on coastal ecosystem education, public awareness, and community-based conservation efforts. Both research presentations were delivered to the Mayor of Iskandar Puteri, Tn Hj Hasrin Kamal Hashim, during the event. The initiative received notable media coverage from The Star, Kosmo Digital, China Press, Media Digital Johor, and SWM Environment Media, further amplifying AIU’s visibility and commitment to sustainability.
Both projects underscore AIU’s long-term vision in supporting environmental resilience and align with its commitment to champion the Net-Zero Carbon Initiative. These efforts also reflect the university’s mission to integrate research, community outreach, and sustainability into impactful real-world solutions.
The event brought together nearly 200 volunteers from local communities, universities, public agencies, and the private sector. Participants successfully planted 300 mangrove saplings and collected over 150 kilograms of waste through a plogging activity, raising awareness of the link between waste management and ecosystem health.
This collaboration not only enriches the academic landscape of AIU but also reinforces its standing as a proactive institution contributing meaningfully to Malaysia’s environmental and climate goals.
