ALOR SETAR, 20 June 2025 – The Seminar in Social Development Issues, held on 19 June 2025 at Albukhary International University (AIU), brought together undergraduate researchers, academics, and reviewers to address key challenges facing communities across Asia and Africa. Organized under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayesah Uy Abubakar, the seminar was part of the Conference Abstracts Cluster III and featured evidence-based research from students of the Bachelor of Social Development program.
The event served as a platform for 12 undergraduate presenters to share findings on critical socio-economic topics. The academic rigor of the seminar was overseen by reviewers Dr. Sivasegaran Nadarajan and Dr. Ingrid Holst, who ensured that the quality of research presented met scholarly standards.
Among the key presentations was a study by Taqiyya Alka Haqiqy and Tiara Salsabila, who explored climate-induced displacement in Jakarta. Their research highlighted the socio-economic consequences of resettlement and emphasized the urgency for climate-resilient housing policies. Another group, Nensy Setyaningrum and Zahra Abdul Hamid, analyzed the disempowerment of Indonesian women fisherfolks through the lens of the National Strategic Project (PSN), calling for gender-sensitive reforms in coastal development.
Puan Nazhira Maharani and Nurul Jariah bt Leo focused on the brain drain phenomenon in Indonesia, identifying socio-political drivers behind the migration of skilled professionals and recommending strategic responses to retain talent. Meanwhile, Karisa Theona Ferani Indrianto, Emil Secerovic, and Ismail Osman Ismail Abdelgadir presented on forced displacement in Sudan, detailing the human security implications caused by prolonged conflict and instability.
The seminar concluded with a compelling study by Abdusemed Nakuda Abdella and Khalid Omran Mahmood Khalifa, who investigated malnutrition among women and children in Zamzam Camp, North Darfur. Their findings underscored how structural violence and conflict have intensified the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
This seminar reflects AIU’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, critical inquiry, and the development of socially responsible graduates. By addressing real-world issues through research, the Bachelor of Social Development program continues to prepare students for leadership roles in advancing inclusive and sustainable solutions.
