ALOR SETAR, 30 April 2025 – On Sunday, 20 April 2025, Students Empowerment and 3 Zero Committee under the School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS) at Albukhary International University (AIU) conducted a meaningful community engagement program at Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Tanjung Bendahara, Kedah. This initiative was designed to empower individuals with disabilities through a hands-on workshop that taught them how to repurpose discarded fabrics into practical items such as mats and dusters. The workshop aimed to provide the participants with essential skills in sustainable crafting, which can serve as a foundation for eco-friendly entrepreneurship and income-generating activities.
The program aligned closely with AIU’s mission to foster social responsibility, community development, and environmental sustainability. It also reflected the university’s commitment to its 3 Zero Philosophy: Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Net Carbon Emission. By promoting sustainable waste management and creative recycling practices, the activity contributed to environmental conservation. Participants not only learned how to turn waste into useful products but also gained a sense of independence, self-worth, and motivation to contribute meaningfully to society.
This initiative also provided a valuable service-learning opportunity for AIU students. Through direct engagement with the PDK participants, students from SBSS developed key skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, and empathy. They were able to apply classroom knowledge to real-life contexts and witnessed first-hand the impact of community service. The experience was both educational and emotionally enriching, strengthening the students’ sense of purpose and social responsibility.
PDK Tanjung Bendahara, managed under Malaysia’s Department of Social Welfare (JKM), plays a vital role in supporting the rehabilitation and development of individuals with disabilities. It offers education, therapy, and vocational training to help its members achieve greater independence and a better quality of life. The collaboration with AIU was warmly welcomed by the PDK, and the shared experience helped foster stronger ties between the university and the local community.
This community outreach program is a testament to AIU’s dedication to creating meaningful change beyond the classroom. Through collaborative efforts like this, AIU continues to nurture compassionate leaders who are committed to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
