Student Democracy in Action as AIU Students Cast Votes for Representative Council Leadership

ALOR SETAR, 4 February 2024 – In a lively and democratic atmosphere, 973 students out of 1264 enrolled at Albukhary International University (AIU) participated in the voting process, to choose their leaders for the upcoming 2023/2024 term in the eagerly anticipated Student Representative Council (SRC) General Election. The election, held today from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, experienced a significant rise in voter turnout reaching 77%, in contrast to the previous year. This increase highlights the students’ eagerness to actively participate in shaping the future of their student council.
Excitement filled the campus as students eagerly queued up at polling stations to exercise their voting rights for 10 general seats, 4 seats dedicated to the School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS), 4 for the School of Education and Human Sciences (SEHS), and 2 for the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI).
This year’s SRC General Election featured a diverse range of candidates, each presenting unique perspectives on how to enhance student life, address concerns, and foster a more inclusive and vibrant campus community. The candidates, representing different academic programmes, brought forth a variety of ideas to address issues ranging from academic support to campus sustainability.
Leading up to the election day, the Secretariat organized a variety of student engagement activities, involving open campaigns on both physical and social media platforms, along with public speaking sessions. These endeavours provided students with opportunities to interact with the candidates, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the candidates’ visions for the student body.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Razali Muhamad, announced the election results in the presence of candidates and their supporters at the Senate Foyer, Chancellery Building. The newly elected SRC members were reminded of their vital role in representing the student body, advocating for students’ interests regardless of their backgrounds, and actively contributing to the overall development of the AIU community.
The results of the election were announced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Datuk Ts. Dr. Mohd Razali Muhamad with the presence of the candidates and their supporters, at the Senate Foyer Chancellery Building. The elected SRC members were reminded that they play a crucial role in representing the student body, advocating for student’s interests irrespective of their backgrounds, and contributing to the overall development of the AIU community.
The SRC General Election marked a significant moment for the student body, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and the democratic process within the AIU.
