And with bang, the Albukhary International University OnCampus program brings its final talk series titled: Accelerating SDG’s with Hult Prize. We are extremely honored to have four amazing speakers from across the globe giving insights into four SDG’s. Our esteemed speakers Ms Heeta Lakhani, Mr Ashan Perera, Ms Esme Abbott, Ms Nisreen Al Sayeem have incredible expertise in the United Nations SDGs and are vocal activists for a sustainable world. We hope that from this webinar the entrepreneurs will know more about the SDG’s and how they can align them with their social enterprises to create and achieve sustainable change in their communities. Workshops

To nurture and groom our budding entrepreneurs, we conducted 2 workshops. The first workshop: The Building Blocks of Becoming a Social Entrepreneur which was hosted on the 07th of December 2022 by Prof. Ass. Dr. Suraya Hanim Mokhtar, the Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences at Albukhary International University  deep dived  the participants into social entrepreneurship. The workshop – conducted over two hours – highlighted the key building blocks of a social enterprise – and exposed the participants to the impact measurement tools. The entrepreneurs left the workshop with a holistic and comprehensive understanding on how  to develop a social enterprise and ensure that their ground breaking ideas are impact focused and aligned with the elements of a social venture.

In the second workshop: Money Matters which was hosted on 11 December 2022 we were honored to have Mr Mohamad Mokhlis B Ahmad Fuad, the School of Business and Social Science lecturer at Albukhary International University as a mentor for the entrepreneurs. His expertise in the banking sector enlightened the entrepreneurs about costing strategies to ascertain that their business ideas are not only profitable but sustainable as well. The entrepreneurs were enriched with money management centric knowledge in budgeting, costing and many more.

The post On Campus Program – Talk Series & Workshop first appeared on Albukhary International University.

The participants were exposed to physical activities and several workshops for 3 days and 2 nights of the event. The physical activities involved were caving at Gua Anak Tempurung, White Water Rafting, and Night Trekking. The outcomes of these physical activities were 1) Instilled the teamwork among students, 2) developed the resilience among students, and 3) enhanced the team management skills among participants. As for the outcome of attending the workshops in that camp, the students were being coached on how to effectively communicate with other individuals in a professional setting. Also, the students experienced in generating ideas and writing a brief proposal of the events that they think may benefit the students and community in AIU.

The event ended well, in which everyone was safely arrived at campus on 12^th November 2022, approximately at 9.30pm. The event received a lot of positive feedback, and the students were hoping these types of activities will be conducted annually for the betterment of students.

28 November 2022 – Albukhary International University (AIU) organized their Public Lecture Series #2. The public lecture was held in the Albukhary International University Convocation Hall at 10.00 a.m and was attended by the Board of Governors of AIU, international and local dignitaries, faculty members and public.

The speaker Sasibai Kimis, who is the Chief Innovation Officer and Founder of the Earth Heir gave her admirable speech entitled “So You Want to Save The World?” which indicating on her path into discovering the Malaysian heritage and championing #MadeinMalaysia.

During the course of this event, a total of ten (10) booths were exhibited. The Earth Heir team presented their environmentally friendly collections of heritage craftsmanship and artisanal products that are in line with the theme of the event, along with AIU’s Social Business Design Lab (3 Zeros). The AIU team exhibited their Social Business Design Lab, which emphasized on the 3 Zeros (Zero Unemployment, Zero Poverty, and Zero Net Carbon Emission) as well as students’ projects relating to the said theme. A team from Menara Alor Setar also participated in this event and promoted their newly-launched activities.

The School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS), School of Education and Social Sciences (SEHS), and Centre for Foundation Studies were among the schools that graduated during this second convocation. This distinguished occasion was officiated by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and was graced by Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Abd Aziz Bin Tajuddin.

During the course of the convocation, four awards were given out. The Chancellor’s Award, the Sharifah Rokiah Special Award, the Vice Chancellor’s Award, and the Best Foundation Studies Student Shariah law

We kicked off our Oncampus Program with an interactive talk series with Hult Prize 2022 Winners Eco-Bana. The founder of Eco-Bana, Lennox Omondi together with Ragdah Ashraf -Oncampus winner at Alneelain University in Sudan- and Amtal Shafi -Hult Prize runner-up at Albukhary International University- enthusiastically related their journey as Hult Prize participants. Their varied journeys were an inspiration that incited our diverse pool of students to come together and embark on an experience for creating impact in our communities through social ventures aimed at Redesigning Fashion.

Talk Series 02: Sustainability in Entrepreneurship

To initiate the participants into the Hult Prize Challenge, we hosted Talk Series 02 titled “Sustainability in Entrepreneurship”. Our guest speakers included Mr Murendeni Mafumo and Ms Supriya Jangre. Ms Supriya Jangre is the Hult Prize Regional Director of Central and South Asia. And, Mr Murendeni is the founder of Kusini Water – a social enterprise in South Africa aimed to tackle the lack of access to safe clean water to South Africans by building water treatment systems from nanotechnology and macadamia nut shells. From this talk, the students gained an all-rounded insight into the 2023 Hult Prize Challenge and the building blocks of a sustainable enterprise.

Talk Series 03:

To wrap off our talk series events, we hosted Talk Series 03 titled “ The Art of Creative Thinking”. We were honored to have Ms Jessica Gonzalez from UpRoot and Ms Payton Ryz from Fomeno as speakers. Their enterprises not only won the Hult Prize 2020 and 2021 challenge respectively, but are revolutionizing the world through their social impact centric nature. Uproot is challenging a sustainable world of plastic straws through cassava straws that are eco-friendly due to their biodegradable nature. And, Fomeno is fighting for a more circular fashion industry through its innovative thrift app. This talk series spurred participants to think out of the box to make the fashion industry sustainable.

Movie Night : The True Cost

The True Cost, a documentary highlighting the true cost of the fashion industry which in simple terms includes desertification, water contamination, slavery, birth defects and death from pesticides and chromium. The shocking, raw and unfiltered revelation of the fashion industry gave the students a truthful account of the blood that goes into making the clothes we wear and the innocent people who are paying the price of fast fashion. The documentary left us all with a deep seated sadness and an unwavering sense of the urgency needed to redesign the fashion industry as well as our own individual fashion choices.

School of Education and Human Sciences (SEHS) in collaboration with the Student Affairs Department (SA) conducted a 2-day event of Aidiludha Qurban and Community Engagement Program. The first day was conducted at Masjid Al-Fateh, Kuala Pegang, Baling, Kedah coordinated by Ms. Aini Syahira Bt Jamaluddin assisted by 49 AIU community. The activities include cleaning, and painting the mosque as well as cutting and cooking Qurban meat. On the second day, the SA conducted another Qurban program at Masjid Darulaman Kampung Rambong. The activities involved preparation and distribution of Qurban Meat among 150 Asnaf families and the remaining meat was distributed to the villagers. The AIU founders’ family and AIU staff donated 3 cows for the Qurban Programs

26th April 2022 -The World Quran Hour along with Majlis Khatam Quran AIU was conducted by Albukhary International University in collaboration with Masjid Albukhary. More than a hundred people came from all over Alor Setar to participate. The Quran Al Sajadah recital was led by a few AIU representatives and was done simultaneously by Muslims around the world.

AIU Community Service Club in collaboration with Bank Rakyat conducted a Ramadan Charity event to distribute groceries packs for 130 families in need around Alor Setar at Masjid Albukhary. Lecturers and staff also donated to help reach the target. The families were delighted and happy with the donation given.
